Cool Spot

Cool Spot

Not Just Frozen Yogurt

When did you open Cool Spot & what was your inspiration?

I opened Cool Spot in November of 2016. At the time there weren’t many food concept locations on the west side of Brentwood in the country club shopping center. I lived in Shadow Lakes for six years prior and always thought we needed more food choices on that side of town. I was working my day job in veterinary medical sales, but I always wanted to be an entrepreneur.

Why frozen yogurt?

After speaking to my close neighbors in trying to decide on a food concept, everyone overwhelmingly said a nice dessert option would be perfect for all the families with children. I loved the idea of having a nice place to walk to and enjoy a cold dessert after dinner or to cool down during a hot Brentwood day. Frozen yogurt is extremely popular. There are many options that allow people to indulge with something rich and sweet or get something on the refreshing, healthier side. We offer low fat, nonfat, no sugar added, and dairy free options. Flavors rotate and vary on time of year.

What would you say makes your business stand out from others?

Our business stands out because we offer a clean, fun, enjoyable environment to get dessert. We offer 10 different options of frozen yogurt at all times, but we offer even more if that is not what you are in the mood for. We have slushees, fresh baked cookies, espresso/coffee drinks, candy, cold drinks, hot pretzels, and churros. We even have three flavors of dog frozen yogurt to choose from for your 4-legged family member. Several of our flavors of frozen yogurt are actually made in-house and are unique to just Cool Spot.  People can enjoy their dessert at our neighboring park which has a playground for the little ones.

What's your most popular flavor & your favorite flavor?

We make an in-house Brentwood Orchard Cherry frozen yogurt during cherry picking season with cherries from Marsh Creek Cherry Orchard. We also make our famous Hold the Cow dairy-free chocolate frozen yogurt that people come from all over to enjoy. We make a Girl Scout thin mint frozen yogurt with Girl Scout cookies from a local troop every year.

Why Brentwood?

I’ve been a part of the Brentwood community for 12 years, and it’s the perfect place to have a cool dessert place for all of the wonderful families who live here. We love doing fundraising events to kick back donations to local nonprofits and schools as well.

Do you have any hopes/goals for the future of Cool Spot?

Yes, I’ve recently partnered up and am now sharing my business with Rich and Vanitha Cotton to help grow Cool Spot. We recently launched our own frozen yogurt food truck in addition to the store. We offer frozen yogurt, frozen lemonade, cookies, coffee, hot cocoa, milkshakes, soda floats, and more on the truck. We are now appearing at special events like the Brentwood high school football games, Brentwood downtown events, elementary school events, concerts at local wineries and hopefully a lot more to come. People can book our truck to come to big private events as well.

Aloha Ice

Hawaiian Style Shave Ice

When did you open Aloha Ice & what was your inspiration?

First, let us introduce ourselves. We are Dante and Rachelle Haynes, owners of Aloha Ice. We've always had a vision of owning our own business, but never took the risk. After years of working in executive management, Dante came to me and said it was time for us to work for ourselves. With his owner mindset we started to collaborate on ideas that interested us. During this time, I, Rachelle, was still working in healthcare, commuting back and forth to work. The commute started to get longer and longer each day and I agreed with Dante that it was time to take that step out of our comfort zone. We made the decision to start Aloha Ice as a pop-up concept while still working our full-time jobs just to test the water. As time went on, we did multiple pop-ups over the course of a month throughout the whole Bay Area. The feedback we received during these events reassured us to continue this adventure.

Aloha Ice was established on February 17, 2021 and our brick-and-mortar location opened on June 17, 2022. Our biggest inspiration are our daughters. We wanted to show them that anything is possible if they work hard and believe in themselves. We also wanted to provide a space where family, friends, and the community can feel welcome and enjoy a nice cold treat.

Why shave ice?

We have taken many trips with family and friends to Hawaii, and during the pandemic we were unable to travel back to the islands. One of the biggest things we missed in Hawaii was the aloha spirit and the fluffy, soft, flavorful shave ice. We would try to locate shave ice places around the Bay Area and nothing came close to Hawaiian style shave ice. We decided to do our research and take matters in our own hands, and we created Aloha Ice. We are all about bringing smiles and laughter to people around us, and we knew that this dessert would bring that aloha spirit to everyone that tasted our shave ice.

What would you say makes your business stand out from others?

We're providing a smooth, buttery texture of ice packed with flavor in each bite, which is hard to find here in the mainland. We spent day and night, for months, practicing the craft of shave ice to ensure we are providing a product that brings a little aloha to everyone that tries our treat. We look at everyone that we serve as a family member and hope they feel that way. This is bigger than just shave ice; we are here to bring our community together and impact those around us in a positive way. We are very big on community collaboration and are always looking for ways to give back. We also provide over 30 flavors which include sugar-free options to allow everyone the opportunity to enjoy our shave ice. Our syrups are made in-house daily with pure sugar cane. Most of our flavors under our "Hits" category are made from scratch to provide the best tasting flavors for our shave ice. Also, our toppings such as our azuki beans, mochi, crème, sweet honey boba, and Ube condensed milk are all made in-house by Rachelle.

What's your most popular flavor & your favorite flavor?

Since opening our storefront, Summer Breeze, which has a vanilla ice cream scoop on the bottom and flavors of half mango, half guava drizzled with peach, topped with sweet condensed milk, is our number one seller. It was also created by our eldest daughter who is eight years old. During our outside events, Unicorn Surprise, which also included a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom, flavors of cotton candy, blue bubblegum, and banana topped with sweet condensed milk, was our top seller, which was also created by our youngest daughter who is six years old. The owners’ top two flavors are: Tropical Sunset, which contains a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom, flavors of pineapple, p.o.g. (passion fruit, orange, and guava), drizzled with coconut and topped with sweet condensed milk, and Ubelicious, which contains a scoop of ube ice cream on the bottom, flavors of ube drizzled with coconut, topped with macapuno ice cream and ube condensed milk.

Why Brentwood?

We wanted to open Aloha Ice in the area we live in and see our impact on the community. We have been here for six years and seen the city continue to grow; we wanted to be a part of that growth. The city of Brentwood is a central location which draws people from all over the Bay Area, which provides an unlimited customer base. Whenever our family wanted dessert, it was always the same options, and we wanted to provide Brentwood with a unique dessert option, which would attract people from all over.

Do you have any hopes/goals for the future of Aloha Ice?

Our goal is to continue to provide the aloha spirit to everyone we interact with and to continue to be a positive impact in our community. In the future, Aloha Ice does wish to expand the brand to other areas.
