Dutch Bros Brentwood

Spreading Cheer with More Than Just Coffee

Courtney Shaffer has always believed in the Dutch Bros philosophy of, “we may sell coffee, but we’re in the relationship business.” When she joined the team as a college student in 2004 in Oregon, Courtney instantly felt like she found a second family. “It was an amazing job to have while in college because it had so much flexibility,” said Courtney. Even when she decided to relocate to a different part of the state, Courtney still stuck with Dutch Bros and transferred locations. “I took a temporary break to go into sales in 2007 but quickly realized that it was not for me. The environment was not the same as Dutch Bros. I was so used to that family atmosphere and coming in every day and loving what I did.” When Courtney made the decision to move back home to Medford, Oregon and shift out of sales, it was a no-brainer to return to her Dutch Bros family. “It was time to go back to what I knew and loved.”

After starting over with Dutch Bros, Courtney went back to her role as a night girl and moved her way up to management. A few years later, it was time to take her coffee-slinging career to the next level. Courtney signed her franchise agreement in 2013 and began hunting for the perfect location. She discovered an available spot in Oakley and started renovating. “I worked for the franchisee in Vacaville for the summer and then moved to Brentwood in August 2014,” said Courtney. She officially opened the doors to Dutch Bros Oakley in October 2014 with a crew of 18 people. “I moved to California specifically to open my own Dutch Bros and chase my dream. I didn’t know a single person. I was taking a leap of faith knowing that Dutch Bros would be my family, and it still is.”

A couple years after opening her doors, Courtney met her now-husband Brian and he jumped at the chance to join his wife on this journey. “We do this together,” said Brian. “It’s a joint effort. We truly are a family owned and run business.” With the overwhelming and steady success of their Oakley location, Courtney and Brian knew it was time to expand into Brentwood. They found their Brentwood Boulevard location and originally were unsure if it was placed too far on the edge of town. However, the outcome blew them away. “We opened our Brentwood location in February 2020 right before the pandemic, but Brentwood has been nothing but open arms. They have continued to show up.” Whether it’s cherry-picking season or Fourth of July or families heading out to the delta, Dutch Bros Brentwood stays busy. “We have learned that our location is perfect for customers to get in and back out easily without much hassle,” said Brian. Not a coffee drinker? Patrons can choose from so much more than a coffee menu. Dutch Bros Brentwood also offers seasonal drinks, energy drinks, lemonade, tea, shakes, hot cocoa, smoothies, sparkling soda and snacks.

One of the most common pieces of feedback that Courtney and Brian are looking to mitigate are their drive through lines. “People don’t always have the time to wait,” said Brian.  Beyond staffing, there is one other action they can take to try and help to relieve some of the congestion: open additional locations. And that’s precisely what they plan to do. Their second Brentwood storefront will be on Lone Tree Way in front of WinCo, at the end of a multi-tenant building across from Five Guys. Although the task of opening another Brentwood location will keep Courtney and Brian plenty busy, they don’t plan to stop there. Their hope is to continue to grow their footprint in the future.

Brian and Courtney attribute their success to the acceptance of the community. “A lot of people didn’t know that we were Brentwood residents until somewhat recently,” said Courtney. “Although we are part of a larger chain, we are locally owned and operated. We live right here in Brentwood! Our oldest goes to Adams Middle School, our middle attends Love 4 Learning, and our youngest will hopefully be headed there in the future. We love this area.” The Shaffers also are part of the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Brentwood Coalition and are actively trying to get even more involved. They love to help support those that support the community like Brentwood Community Chest, the Contra Costa Food Bank, Shephard’s Gate, Relay for Life and various other local charities. The couple also is proud to support local youth sports and education, like EC Revolution, Brentwood PAL, and teachers.

Dutch Bros Brentwood also owes its accomplishments to their incredible staff. Their over 90 employees have helped in connecting the business to the community in a unique way. “They know when regulars are in line and don’t even need to wait for them to order,” said Brian. “They already have their drink ready; creating an amazing customer experience is what our crew does best! We just want to continue creating an environment where our crew can come to work, have fun, and blow minds.”
