A Piece of Napa Closer to Home
Hidden just out of town, down Balfour Road, sits the gorgeous vineyard and tasting room of Hannah Nicole Vineyards...
Tucked away from the main road, Hannah Nicole has remained somewhat of a Brentwood hidden gem, despite the fact that it has been open to the public for over 20 years. Originally offering tastings out of the on-site private residence, the winery opened their event center and tasting room in 2009. The property boasts just over 50 planted acres of wines with 10 different grape varieties; two white and eight red. “Utilizing those 10 grape varieties, we grow everything, produce it, and bottle it all on-site,” said Sean M. Quinn, Winemaker since 2018. “We are a full estate winery. We are fully soil to glass, which is pretty cool. When you come here, we want what’s in your glass to be from here. We want to be able to point and show you exactly where it grew.”
Sean’s entire idea is to highlight Brentwood as a place to grow grapes while showcasing the fact that he and his team can bottle it right there for you as well. One of the biggest changes Sean has made since taking over as Winemaker is to bring in a clear delineation between two styles of wine. “We have our Premier level and Estate level,” said Sean. “Premier is an opportunity to showcase the best wine we can make from the property as blends. The Estate wines are highlighting individual grape varieties that we think do well.” Hannah Nicole’s location is able to benefit from the cool air coming off of the Delta, which allows for even ripeness and perfect acidity. Sean has also added an increased focus on soil health, which leads to better canopies and fruit. “We do a lot of soil work and don’t use any sprays.”
For those who may be visiting Hannah Nicole Vineyards for the first time and are unsure where to start, Director of Operations, Chris Close-Thorn, has some recommendations. “If you’re a red drinker, the most popular lately has been our Balfour Blend or the Mount Diablo Red,” said Chris. “If you’re more of a white wine drinker, people tend to lean more toward our Mount Diablo White or Viognier because of its crisp taste. We also can’t keep our Rosé on the shelves.” Wine enthusiasts are also invited to join any of the four different membership levels. Hannah Nicole offers a two, three, six, and 12 bottle quarterly membership with a one-year commitment, as well as added perks such as discounts on event space and first dibs on special events.
Whether you’re searching for a fun and delicious date night or a family daytime outing, Hannah Nicole Vineyards has you covered. They offer free live music every Saturday (provided there are no private events that day), a monthly bottomless mimosa brunch with live music and food catered by Vin Alegro out of Discovery Bay, Thirsty Thursdays with catering by Sticky Chicken and Ribs, and their summer concert series starting in June. Hannah Nicole also offers special occasion events like their Masquerade Ball in October, Mother’s and Father’s Day events, and two Sip ‘n’ Shop events (April and November).
“After everything that’s gone on in the last couple of years, we just want to get back out into the community,” said Chris. “When everything got pulled back so drastically, we couldn’t be as big of a part of the community as we wanted to. Now our whole goal is to let everyone know that we’re still here, creating events for the whole family (or just the grownups). Get out of the city, relax with our beautiful views, and enjoy a piece of Napa closer to home.”
